End of December we cleared out and from Nouméa made our way to Île des Pins so say hallo to friends.
On the way we stopped at Baie de Prony. Recently they opened a mine that collects on the surface ore poor in nickel that is chemically processed with acids. Not to mention the ecological disaster.
We dropped the anchor in Baie du carenage. It’s a cyclone hole that protects you well from the winds, but in strong rains, the river can carry sediments that can alter the holding of the anchor.
With the dingy we went up the river and had a relaxing bath in the thermal pool.
Next day we made our way to îles des Pins.

In the 1870ies, this place was designated by the French to be a penal center. Around 3000 Communards were moved there.
The penitentiary was closed 1911 and the land given back to the Kanaks.
This place is about 60 miles away from Nouméa and can be accessed by Ferry that can even carry cars.
It’s also visited by the line cruisers. Kuto Bay is a sheltered place for the yachts in the trade winds, and the water is crystal clear.
