We left NC December 28th. The weather forecast was predicting E-ESE trade winds about 15 to 20 knots, later on turning NE than N, all good for us heading south.
Yea well, another passage close hold, but we are used to. At the beginning sea was a little bit choppy, some currents against us becoming slowly more comfortable.
Evening of the first day of year 2010, as Pui is serving diner, the boat hit a wave and made Pui lose her balance. She landed arcos the galley in the chart table corner and broke ribs on the right side.
First I made her a bandage and evaluated the situation. My biggest worry was that the lungs got damaged in the accident. It seemed not to be the case.
I made radio contact with Russell Radio on 6’515 at 18h00 NZDT. We got medical assistance and I gave Pui pain killers we had on board. Then we kept contact every 12 hours to update the situation. They were ready for a helicopter evacuation in case of complication.
The next days wind shifter NE than N and finally NW making the trip faster and less uncomfortable for Pui. In the mean time Pui could start to lay down.
At sunrise Tuesday January 5th, we could see Cape Reinga.At 15h00 we were moored in Opua Marina. Custom cleared Pui quickly in and an ambulance brought her to the Hospital of Kawakawa for a checkup, while I was finishing the clearance procedure.
Later in the afternoon, the Custom Officer drove me to the hospital to join Pui.
She had 3 broken ribs, and no lungs damage. We booked a berth in the marina for one month for Pui to have it easier to get on and off the boat.
We had an 8 days 5 hour trip for 894 miles at an average speed of 4.6 nkts and motored 38 hours.
