NZ, February 2010, Glide

We met Michel and Marianne a Swiss couple sailing on Sostène. Jules, they Grand Son was with them, he is part of a school exchange. On the week ends they go to the local Whangarei glide club for Jules to get his license. It cost much more money to do it in Switzerland.

The club uses a winch to bring the glides in the air. It’s a 400m long rope they wind on a wheel.

Some time the rope breaks and needs to be spliced.

The start is very impressive. I went for a turn; it was not easy to put me in the glide.

Unfortunately there were no upwards pushing winds to keep us in the air.

No way I’m too heavy!
