Indonesia, August 26 2010, Flores, Kelimutu

The 25th of August, we signed in by Sikas Tour and Travel JL Masjid Agung-Ende for a one day tour to Kelimutu. The tour all included they say, includes entrance fees to the park, the visit of two villages, the lunch and refreshments on the way.
It Start’s at 04h30 to be at the park by sunrise, the breakfast is not included in the price but can be taken at the pick up place. The cost was 34 Euros per person. Vinsen was our guide for the day. He speaks many languages and has been all around the world.

We filled a 16 sitter bus, and of we went on the dark roads to drive up the mountain to see the volcano craters. The landscape is supposed to be stoning by sunrise.

As on the way day light was setting in we were driving thru stoning landscapes on the tortuous narrow road.

Two and a half hour later we arrived at the park entrance, sunrise was gone and we could see the early starters coming down the track.

We had a 30 minutes walk up the track and arrived at the view point. We were in the middle of three volcano craters lakes.

One of them stays by itself, the other two are together. Each lake has is one water color. Dark green, Turquoise, and light green.

The last one was bubbling and you could smell the sulfuric vapors.

ETERNAL BELIEVES.

It is believed that spirits come to Kelimutu when people die. The maE (spirit) would leave its village and remain in Kelimutu forever. Before entering one of the lakes, the spirit would first meet Konde Ratu, the guard of the gate at Perekonde. Which lake the spirit would enter depends on its age and character when alive.

The lakes look like colorful paints. The water’s color changes without any prior natural clues.

The mineral contained in the water causes it to change into unpredictable color.

The situation in Kelimutu changes not only due to lake’s color but also to the climate.

It is no wonder this mystical place has become a legend since the old days. Local people believe the place is sacred.

As the morning was going on and the sun getting hot, we made our way back to the bus and drove around the mountain to stop at the first custom village.
